In a recent interview with Cosmoprof North America (CPNA), the President of the Consumer Product Testing Co. (CPTSM), Craig Weiss, spoke out on cosmetic product safety and product testing as a whole.
If anyone knows this industry, it’s Craig. His father first started CPTSM in 1975. From a young age, Craig was exposed to this industry through a company that now has over 40 years of honest, credible testing experience.
Before the CPTSM became what it is today, Craig watched and learned from his dad. He went on to study biochemistry, and after he graduated, there were no available positions for him at his father’s company. This is when Craig went into the cosmetics industry, where he gained valuable experience. By 1991, he joined CPTSM, and nearly 27 years later, he is the President. Successfully running a $15 million operation means that Craig is able to provide 130 job opportunities in his community and ensure the safety and efficacy of a variety of consumer products.
Today, the well-respected company offers a wide range of capabilities and is a world-class leader when it comes to the testing of pharmaceutical, personal care and therapeutic products. Committed to both their clients and the public, they test over-the-counter drugs, medical devices, sunscreens, cosmetics and much more.
Although Craig runs CPTSM he remains active in all aspects of the industry. He is involved in numerous organizations, which helps him stay on top of the latest in technology and resources. He is on the board of Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers and Distributors (ICMAD), where he chairs their Technical/Regulatory Committee and is also spearheading the effort for ICMAD’s Annual Technical/Regulatory Forum.
Craig has always been committed to learning. He commented on his involvement with this organization, “ICMAD is a cosmetic trade association with over 800 member companies. The association offers many unique services to companies of all sizes, from start-up to fortune 500 companies. My key interest from the start was the opportunity to educate and be educated by the diverse group of experts ICMAD has.”
Within his informative Q&A, he provided insight into safety testing, as well as the “5 Necessary Steps to Take When Launching a Cosmetic Product.” This is an eye-opening “how-to” document that highlights key steps in relation to product formulation, preclinical testing, safety testing, claims support and pilot batch testing.
